Oulton Hall
According to
*Maupin 1980, and an obituary for Robert's grandson
Robert Barton (1828-1917) (see
*Perriam articles and research), Robert lived at Oulton Hall near Wigton:
Other property
According to
*Penfold, Robert's grandson "
inherited on the death of his father [in 1846]
Thomas Close - which his grandfather had purchased & left to his Second Son - Robert's father - the elder son inheriting the Ivegill Estate."
The only children currently known are given below, and there William is the only son, so clearly something is missing from our knowledge of this family.
If Robert owned both Thomas Close and Ivegill properties on his death in 1795, he may have bought one or both of them from
John Barton the Elder (1754-1789), who moved down to London in ~1783.
Children
With
Mary Richardson (1746-1821):
Grave
According to
Denis Perriam, the stone in Wigton churchyard, which carries a crest, reads:
"
Sacred to the memory of Robert Barton of Wigton, who died Nov 24 1795 aged 48 years. Also Mary his wife, who died August 19 1821 aged 70 years" [70, not 75 as she would be if born in 1746. Which birth year is correct?]
The same stone also commemorates "
William Barton of Carlisle, their son who died Octr 22 1846 aged 61 years" and names some of the children of William and
Mary up to 1852.
